Americans to face Netherlands in knockout round

The United States men's national soccer team (USMNT) has qualified for the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup after defeating Iran, 1-0, on Tuesday.

The lone goal of the match came in the 38th minute, when Christian Pulisic slid the ball past Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. Pulisic was injured on the play and had to be substituted off, but his goal proved to be the game-winner.

The United States held on for the victory despite being outshot by Iran, 13-10. Matt Turner made four saves in goal for the United States, including a key stop on a header from Sardar Azmoun in the 85th minute.

With the victory, the United States finished second in Group B with five points. They will face the Netherlands, the winner of Group A, in the round of 16 on Saturday.

The United States' victory is a major boost for the program. It is the first time that the United States has reached the knockout round of the World Cup since 2014.
